9530 Blackberry Storm Review – Christmas 2008
For those of you following on Twitter.
I am putting most of my Blackberry Storm review notes here as it is easier to blog.
Here is what I am discovering.
Verizon Customer Service
- Business Manager – Excellent
- Phone support *611 very good
9530
- Out of holster profile. I cant find it. Maybe it’s there, but…Who wants their e-mails and messages going off at night. I keep my phone on all night. My old 8700c and the Curves still have the out of holster feature. Not found on the 9530. At least not yet. This bug’s! (Update 12/27/08) Verizon rep e-mailed me back. Informed me of Bedside Mode. See Clock function on phone. Thank you Verizon Rep!)
- Browser – Not too great. Need to be able use Twitter to the point of sending invites.
- SMS – Can’t copy a number from a SMS message and put it into my Contacts. I use this to add info to existing contacts, not create new contacts. Again, it could just be me and someone geekier than me please feel free to enlighten me. This is a huge issue for Twitter er’s I would think. My old 8700c brick did this fine. (Update 12/27/08 Found a way to copy and paste some text. I am not proficient at it yet. Haven’t found a way to copy say a PIN number from incoming SMS to paste to a contact.)
- Overall it’s a beautiful phone / device. I’m afraid to drop it. My 8700C got dropped a few times a week as I moved in and out of cars and what not. It always kept going. But a touch screen might bite the dust sooner.
- Overall the phone works very well and since I use Speechphoneand have the new Plantronics Discovery 925 I have been better able to interact with this service. The old 8700c was just too beat up anymore and the old headset was dead.
Verizon Tech Support
- First call setting up 9530 excellent
- Second call the day after Christmas setting up BIS on Curve. Had to change tech support reps. First was completely clueless. Second was good. Knew the difference between BES and BIS.
Other
- Signal strength poor to non-existent. Customer Service actually was honest enough to admit that Verizon may not be my best solution. They have had issues due to terrain logged over a long history and didn’t seem too concerned to fix it. Rather just leaving me to use the 30 days to decide.
- AT&T was poor 1 to 2 bars for the last 2 years. 3 weeks ago went to 4 bars. So I called them to congratulate them. Might just go back to them after all and go with Bold. Who knows T-Mobile might be next. Passed the info up to the Excellent Verizon Business Manager, maybe I will get a “can you hear me now” visit with a bunch of people, a new cell tower and a helicopter hovering over my house.

Hi Tony, I know on my curve, I can copy and paste from SMS without issue, holding the shift and using the scroll bar. Then use the BB button to copy, works great!
for copy and paste all you’ll need to do is put one finger at the beginning, and another finger at the end of the area you want to copy. Slide those two fingers together and you have yourself a highlight. Then go Menu, Copy, and you’re good to paste. If you’re worried about your bad hand-eye coordination, fear not, because hitting the Escape key deletes the highlight.
On your browser question, try Opera, it is free, at http://www.operamini.com . I think you will be pleasantly surprised!
Hi Tommy,
Thank you for your Opera suggestion.
